About this app

Five paintings a day. Circa shows you a painting and asks two questions: where its painter was born, and what year it is from. You drop a pin on the map and choose the year on a timeline. There is no right or wrong: you score by how close you get, in kilometres and in years. The same for everyone. No timer, no rush. WHAT'S INSIDE • 483 works, from Gothic to the twentieth century: Van Eyck, Velázquez, Vermeer, Goya, Turner, Monet, Hopper. • Details for every painting: artist, year, museum, medium and size, with data from Wikidata and images from Wikimedia Commons. • Daily leaderboard and achievements in Game Center. • Your progress travels between your devices over iCloud. • No accounts, no sign-up. WHY THE BIRTHPLACE Because the countries of centuries ago no longer exist. The Duchy of Brabant is on no modern map, so the question is the place and the score is the distance: what survives changing borders. BECOME A PATRON The day's edition is always free. Becoming a patron is a single payment that opens the whole archive —any past edition— and removes ads. It is not a subscription, and buying gives no advantage inside a game.
